NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month, an annual event where writers try to complete a 50,000-word draft in November. This is my 5th, and final progress report.
This week’s Word Count
It’s the last day of the month, and The NaNoWriMo HQ Team has verified my final word count as: 50,212
I passed the 50k mark around 8 pm on November 30th. I did it! I set a goal for myself, I worked every day to achieve it, and I accomplished my goal. Yay me!
Taking Stock of things so far
So far, so good! My goals remain:
- Complete the first draft of my manuscript
While I surpassed the 50,000-word goal for NaNoWriMo, I’m only about two-thirds of the way through my outline. I haven’t achieved my goal to finish the first draft in the month of November which tempers my NaNo ‘win’ just a bit. I’ve recalibrated the metrics and now hope to have this draft finished by the middle of December.

The metrics for this goal aren’t as concrete as word count. I did attend at least one ‘write-in’ every week in November, and I did meet a number of other writers. I interacted online with several nice writers and found strength and encouragement from reaching out to them. Because of these factors, I’m calling this a win. Yay me!
My final and official tally = 50,212 words written in 30 days. That means my daily average was 1,673 words every day throughout the month of November. My daily target was 1,667 so even with all my ups and downs; my daily average was six words over my goal. If I participate again next year, I think I will focus on raising that metric.
November 2016 has ended. And with it, another NaNoWriMo has also ended. But this isn’t the conclusion, this novel’s journey has only just begun.
