NaNoWriMo is a global event

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) began as a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to creative writing. Over the years it has grown to be a global event for writers of all kinds who commit to writing at least 50,000 words during the month of November.

On November 1, participants begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel by 11:59 PM on November 30. And I signed up to do this!

Inspired by The Creative Penn

British writer Christina Penn writes novels and a blog. She also has a favorite podcast and repurposes that content for YouTube. Because YT is my primary source of infotainment, I found one of her interviews on that platform. She mentioned trying NaNoWriMo. I can’t remember who the guest was that she was interviewing. But after hearing the discussion and digging up additional info, I was inspired to try it myself.

NaNoWriMo Ideas aplenty

Like a lot of creative types, I have a lot of ideas and story elements that I’ve cultivated for a while. At the beginning of October, I began collecting them in Evernote and evaluating a good way to move forward, story-wise. When a rough idea began to form, I wrote out a framework and began to fill in the major plot points. As it’s now near the end of October, I have a general outline to begin this challenge.

Like so much of modern life, the ideas are cheap, and it’s the execution that counts. Just ask Friendster or MySpace about the issue. I’m excited to try something new and to bang out a new first draft. In the writing community, there’s a lot of debate about being a ‘pantser’ which means, writing by the seat of your pants. Or being a ‘planner’ which means planning everything out with an outline and a lot of pre-writing schemes. I think most writers fall somewhere in the middle of this continuum, so I’m trying a blend of both. I have a rough outline prepared so that I know where my twists and plot points are, and I’ll write ‘on the fly’ to fill in the gaps between them.

My Newest Projects

I started a YouTube channel to document my ‘novel writing adventure’. I’m Quartknee K on YouTube.

NaNoWriMo Novel Graphic
For the 2016 NaNoWriMo, I’ve registered to compose the first draft of an Urban Fantasy/Cosy Mysteries hybrid novel.

The draft I hope to complete this month will be the first installment of The Mythosonix Mysteries Series.

The Mythosonix are an EDM band made up of two DJs and a vocalist on the road with some session musicians. The day after their gig in San Francisco, the group heads up to Marin for the afternoon to dance outdoors with some of their friends. Their rave is interrupted by the appearance of the Sea-Cyclops, a mythological creature of local legend.

The band becomes accidental detectives as they try to sort out what secrets the Sea-Cyclops could reveal. Their investigation provokes new sightings, and many locals wonder if the secrets of the Sea-Cyclops are better left alone. Are the party-people just hallucinating, or is this something more sinister? The Mythosonix are on the case to find out.
